Consolidation of earthen building materials: a comparative study

The consolidation and protection of mud bricks are a challenge in the field of conservation of archeological sites. One of the solutions is represented by the coverage of the entire excavation that assures a protection against mud dissolution. Unfortunately, this is not always feasible, both for economical and practical issues. For these reasons, alternative solutions are needed. La introducció del paper en la confecció dels llibres i dels registres arxivístics constituí una autèntic revolució ja que possibilità el seu ús de forma massiva en les oficines de les institucions públiques i privades i “popularitzà” el llibre de lectura i estudi. L’enquadernació d’estil mudèjar, hegemònic durant el període baix medieval, constituirà un dels estils més original de la història de l’enquadernació hispànica i que perdurarà fins el segle XVI. El paper com a suport documental i llibrari i l’estil mudèjar de les enquadernacions dels llibres són dues grans aportacions del món àrab.

Esta comunicación reflexiona sobre las razones que han llevado a los estudiosos a sostener la posible influencia del cine soviético de los años veinte en la película española La aldea Maldita (Florián Rey, 1930). Para ello analiza las circunstancias de producción de ambas cinematografías, española y rusa, entendidas en su contexto sociocultural. This paper reflects on the reasons that have led researchers to support the possible influence of the Soviet cinema of the twenties in the Spanish film “La aldea maldita” (The Cursed Village, Florian Rey, 1930). It looks at the circumstances of production of both cinemas, Spanish and Russian, understood in their cultural context.

The role of nano-perovskite in the negligible thorium release in seawater from Greek bauxite residue (red mud)

AbstractWe present new data about the chemical and structural characteristics of bauxite residue (BR) from Greek Al industry, using a combination of microscopic, analytical, and spectroscopic techniques. SEM-EDS indicated a homogeneous dominant “Al-Fe-Ca-Ti-Si-Na-Cr matrix”, appearing at the microscale. The bulk chemical analyses showed considerable levels of Th (111 μg g−1), along with minor U (15 μg g−1), which are responsible for radioactivity (355 and 133 Bq kg−1 for 232Th and 238U, respectively) with a total dose rate of 295 nGy h−1. Abstract A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the use of red mud, a by-product of the alumina industry, as a soil amendment on highly contaminated soils in the vicinity of a former Pb–Zn smelter in Copșa Mica (Romania). Changes in the distribution of Zn, Cd and Pb in various soil fractions, mobility of heavy metals in the soil, and their uptake and effects on growth and productivity of Miscanthus sinensis × giganteus were evaluated. Responses of macropterous females of the ectoparasitoid Melittobia digitata Dahms (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) to direct and indirect cues emitted by its natural hosts as well as laboratory hosts were investigated using a Y-tube olfactometer. To locate the nest ofmud dauber wasps, Trypoxylon politum Say (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), and one of their inquilines, Anthrax spec., parasitoids exploit volatiles from the freshly built nest mud and the empty cocoon constructed by the wasps, as well as their meconium.
